Work can be distracting
From an organizational perspective it’s harder to motivate employees to participate or even show-up when the team building event is on company property. Your employees have been trained to work hard and sometimes they just can’t resist the lure of a sales call or spreadsheet. Keeping the team building on-site can empower them to use their work as a barrier to participation.
People act differently at work
Joe at work is different than Joe at home and Joe at the bar. When you’re at work you act and interact a certain way. Often, you won’t feel as free to get a little silly or state an opinion if your corporate team building activity is on-site. If the event is limited to a single department they may not be comfortable with some of the activities if they know a different department could observe them. Taking it offsite adds a feel of adventure and excitement.
